Maps & Routes Planning

Postby jrsjr » Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:41 am

Maps & Routes: We need to rethink how we plan our routes. Note: I'm referring here to planning the route, which is a different process from how we create and distribute our maps. Microsoft Streets & Trips is an anti-collaborative tool that utterly discourages collaboration and revision and last-minute changes. Streets & Trips is a good tool for producing the online maps and route lists. Perhaps it can be used to produce the final online maps and lists, but not to plan the event.

This division of labor idea seems to be working so well that I decided to try breaking the different areas into their own threads. Let me emphasize again, that the idea behind this is to create an organization to handle the pieces parts involved in putting on a Cannonball, the ultimate gift to whoever will be in charge of each future Cannonball.

Also, for this area, we already have two volunteers, Patrick and PJ. That may be enough, I don't know. Those two folks should feel free to discuss it and post their thoughts here. Thanks for volunteering!

I think that's PJ not Earl.

Anyhow here's some thoughts I had on how to determine the route.

1. pick the start and end city (I've heard Seattle to Miami mentioned)
2. plot all the scooter shops that may fit along the route
3. plot all the "motorcycle roads" in the states that may fit along the route
4. ?

figured we'd post the progress in google maps/earth as it develops.

Glad to help. Patrick's ideas are right on. here's a forth: create a list of all the Scooter Clubs that are along the possible route. Perhaps even a complete list of all the SC's in the country and their "turf". Then if we end up in a town with no scooter shop the local SC could perhaps play host.

And, to raise money for the CBR'08, we sell the map at Rallys thoughout '07. Has anyone ever seen the BMW Riders Book??? That kind of thing...eventually. I recently read a string about a west coast scooter club association...think bigger...a national association or umbrella org.

This would encourage all kinds of scootouring in the US. And put the Cannonball org in the middle of it.

Cannonball '08

Postby JNV » Thu Oct 12, 2006 4:05 pm

Just a thought.
What about trying to organize the Cannonball to start with Amerivespa or Vice Versa. Top Dead Center did that for us this year, didn't they. If the starting location is impossible to set up, then maybe make Amerivespa a stopping point along the route. If that is possible of course.

Here's a first pass of how the shops would show in google maps.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=http://oopsclunkthud.com/cbr08/Shops.kml&ie=UTF8&z=4&ll=39.027719,-97.294922&spn=32.87749,60.644531&om=1

I've got over 100 routes of motorcycle roads so far in my GPS software that I'll be converting to display the same way.

Google Maps

Any of you guys mess around with the Google Maps/My Maps thing? It looks really cool and could be used to map out the route for the next Cannonball.
