Rehoboth Beach Planning

Postby Styrax » Fri Dec 28, 2007 9:50 am

Has any done any planning for the final day at Rehoboth? Any contact with Vespa Rehoboth? I have a connection to the owner of Vespa Rehoboth through my brother. Let me know if I can help out in any way.

Any ideas on the after party loacation? Dogfish Head Brewery? I'll be there around New Years and can do some recon if needed.

I know Larry, the owner of Vespa Rehoboth. He sold me my first modern Vespa 6 years ago. I talked to him about the Cannonball last summer and he was enthusiastic. I will call him to firm things up and find out what he can do to help people ship scooters home.

I'm thinking the Crosswinds would be a great choice for a hotel. It's inexpensive, right on Rehoboth ave 3 block from the ocean and has a nice parking lot for gathering. It's on the same block as Dogfish Head which also has a nice parking lot. If we can get permission, I thought one of these two places would be great for a finishing spot.

The route could finish at one of these two places after running the length of Rehoboth Ave so we can hit the ocean and then come back 3 blocks for the finish.

Is the 20th a set finish date?

Just found out that if we finish on September 20th, that puts us us Rehoboth right in the middle of Nascar weekend at the Dover Speedway.

That means that the rates at all hotels in the area will be jacked up to double the normal rate and have a 2 day minimum.

It's not that close to Dover. Are you sure about the effect on Rehoboth, Chris?

Shiiiitt, it's NASCAR. 45 miles aint nuttin.

Not saying it's going to be totaly impossible to get a room but it will most likely be a problem. Especially if we don't get everyone booked early. We'll definately have a hard time finding a hotel that doesn't have a 2 night minimum.

A few years back, I was working in that area during the week before the NASCAR weekend and tried to get a room for the weekend in Rehoboth. No hotels in town, on Route 1 or in Dewey Beach.

Here are the 2007 rates for the hotel that I thought would be good. http://www.crosswindsmotel.com/Rates.htm

So, do we shift a week earlier or later? can we get confirmation on the NASSCAR weekend? (I don't want to change it only to find we made it worse)

It's definitely that weekend. http://www.doverspeedway.com/calendar/ I'll call a few other hotels to get more of a feel for the reservation policies and rates for that Saturday.

What if we changed the arrival day to Sunday the 21st or Thursday the 18th? I think that would solve the problem.

was told it had to finish on a weekend to avoid the trafic in DC so thursday the 18th is out. the 21st could work but finishing on a sunday means taking off another week day to packup and get home. could still work though.

Let's keep the date. Dover is well to the north and there are a million motel rooms to the south in Dewey and Fenwick if need be. It's after Labor Day so there will still be action at the shore but not that much.

I was in Phoenix for a scooter rally during a NASCAR event in November and it wasn't a big deal.

I'll call some other hotels in the area this week. The problem is that Dover's not very big (unlike Phoenix) so the race books up hotels pretty far out.

We may want move the finish to Ocean City, MD. It is where route 50 ends and hotels won't be an issue. We'd see this sign in our rear view mirror as we pull into town...

I did some motel searching online and things are indeed tighter than I thought. I checked Cape May, NJ which would also be a nice finish but it is tight there too. I still think we should finish on Saturday. When we do our beach run every May we stay at the Tides Motel a block off the beach in Ocean City. I will call them and see if we can block off rooms; if so it should be around $90 or so per room. We should still have the official finish at Vespa Rehoboth. Ocean City is about 30 miles south.
